WHY USE A MIDI SEQUENCER IN THE CLASSROOM?
At the recent mtec 2011 conference held in Sydney, Dave Rogers presented a short session showing the participants how to use Sonar X1 Essential to create arrangements using midi files and their own midi performances.
Dave works as an educator at the Arts Centre’s Digital Learning Hub, developing and delivering programs in music technology, film making and multimedia.

Make a Music Video
At the recent mtec 2011 conference held in Sydney, Peter Mahony and Oscar Partridge presented a short session titled Make a Music Video. They demonstrated how to merge traditional music concepts with contemporary multimedia formats in order to achieve engaging learning experiences. Video elements are treated in musical ways on the video edit time-line, musical structure provides the editing brief and rhythmic cutting to accents expresses the musical style.
Peter Mahony is the manager of the Thinkspace – creative digital media workshop program at Powerhouse Museum in Sydney. Prior to joining the Powerhouse Museum, Peter worked in various roles in theatre, music, community arts and teaching.
Oscar Partridge is the director of Acuity Productions which is an Australian film and video production house, specialising in Corporate Videography, Event Coverage and Film Production Services. Established in 2009, Acuity Productions has been involved in the broadcasting and presentation of corporate video events, live performance coverage, web-series and feature-films.

LEARNING COMPOSITION AND SOFTWARE SKILLS THROUGH GAMES
At the recent mtec 2011 conference held in Sydney, Antony Hubmeyer and Ray Partridge presented a short session titled Compositional Chairs. This is a short, themed composition activity designed to motivate students to practice and apply compositional devices and software skills in a creative manner.
Antony is Head of Performing Arts and Head of Music at Scotch College Adelaide. He has a background in performance particularly in the areas of classical, jazz and popular music and is the manager of the Scotch SoundHouse, a music technology learning centre. Ray Partridge is a music technology consultant based in Sydney and also consults for Roland Corporation as an Education Specialist. We thank Antony and Ray for allowing us to reprint this article.
